It LIVES!!!!

It started far too well and I should have guessed that it would go wrong!  Having snapped a screw off when installing the mech hanger I had the task of trying to remove it.  Tapping it counter-clockwise just resulted in the screw being chewed up further, so I had to break out the drill.  I had tried to avoid having to drill the screw out as its made from steel and the bike frame is aluminium, the latter being much softer than the former.

Surprisingly the screw drilled out fairly easily, so I decided to use the next size thread up and tapped the freshly drilled hole, again this went without a hitch.  I reassembled the mech hanger and put a fresh set of screws in it.  The back one promptly snapped, now I really kicked myself because I was using the same crappy screws that snapped previously causing the mess in the first place.  So out with the drill and away with the tap and die set and out with the rivets.  To be honest I wanted to avoid using rivets as I don’t consider it the best solution for a load bearing connection.  That being said the mech hanger is now on the frame and seems quite secure, so I will keep an eye on it when testing the bike.  The only thing left to do was to put the back wheel on and fit the chain.

So here we go, the picture is slightly affected by the reflective side wall of the back tyre.  I fitted a 116 link chain, thinking that with the 53 tooth front sprocket it might need a few links added.  Quite the opposite, I ended up taking 3 links out of it when fitted as the rear derailleur kept catching on the cassette.  I might take another link out as there is still a fair bit of slack in the drive system.

I just need to add the gear and brake cables and its nearly road ready……………………
